The original design was a wide nave spanned by timber trusses, within which were galleries on three sides supported on columns. At the west end a slender tower and spire rose above three elongated arched entrance doors between buttresses. This in turn was flanked by at least one stairway to the galleries.
The present pulpit by G. E. Streeter was introduced in 1863 it was renovated in 2014. By 1867 a chancel had been added and the interior of the Church transformed to include provision for the nave arcades which were built in 1881. The chancel included reredos, stained glass and choir stalls. It was renovated in 2014.
The Henry Willis organ was installed in 1876.
In the 1880’s the galleries were demolished and the roof rebuilt with pitches of 51°.
In 1898-99 the spire was rebuilt by J. O. Scott to a very similar design of the previous one. One radical change that has never been completed in that the outer walls were to be lined internally with a 4½ inch skin of brickwork and externally faced with knapped flints. The work only got as far as the quoins of certain window reveals and around some monuments. The bricks were toothed for future extensions which never happened. Only the chancel extension is finished with knapped flint.
In 1925 the eastern end of the southern isle was made into a Lady Chapel. This was screened off by a parclose screen. The effect was to absorb the choir space into the chancel, negating the original effect of Scott’s wall around the choir – to create a ‘cancelli’ protruding into the nave.
Chairs were replaced by pews in the early 1970’s. Access for all was provided in 2014 and chairs were reintroduced in the Lady Chapel in 2014.
A kitchenette and crèche area was created in 2016 and the clergy vestry was relocated as a part of the work.
