The Victorian church par excellence in the south part of the diocese. Giles Gilbert Scott was appointed by the Rev. W. C. Buckley in the early 1860’s to restore this church to an imagined medieval past. Whilst tactfully retaining it’s original 14th century style he renewed many elements – internally including some of the furnishings (the upper part of the Rood Screens, the painted panels on the pulpit and the poppy heads on the benches. Much work was also done by the William Morris firm with designs by Morris himself, Maddox Brown, Simeon Solomon, Phillip Webb and the young Burne-Jones, another friend of the vicar’s. The church glows with their stained glass – including a procession of Saints that are the glass equivalents to the strong luminous work of the early Pre–Raphaelites – particularly the great east window. From the 1870’s and 80’s further work by Burne–Jones a new roof designed by Morris, and mosaics supplied by J. Powell and Sons. This church is a must for 19th century enthusiasts and will give pleasure to many more.
