Precariously set on a bluff overlooking a wide valley, the church is distinguished by its tall handsome Saxon tower. The rest of the building reveals Norman, late medieval and 19th century interventions with monuments from both the 17th and 18th centuries. The 19th century changes were brought about by that keen Tractarian, The Rev Henry Crawley (a relation of William Gibbs the ecclesiastical philanthropist – Keeble College Oxford and Tyntesfield outside Bristol). Adjacent to his re ordered chancel you come across the extended figure of a knight in Purbeck marble, probably Sir Gerard de l’Isle (d. circa 1287) and on the wall beyond a huge, for this church at least, monument to Dr Thomas Turner (d.1714) by Thomas Stayner. Even more impressive is the vision on the other side of the altar, the best baroque monument in the county, to Elizabeth, Lady Carey, 1617 -20. This is a small church that punches well beyond its weight.
Building is open for worship
It is kept locked but plenty of keyholders in the village.
