The first mention of Caldwell is in the Domesday Survey. There is nearby evidence of Roman settlement including a road, and local records exist for evidence of Bronze and Iron Age settlements. The Victoria County History references a late 12th century/early 13th century chapel in Caldwell, though no further details have been located. A Grade II listed, 16th or 17th century circular pigeon-cote sits in a field to the north side.
Other than burials on the site, there is no known evidence for archaeology on the site, though sensitivity to nearby archaeological potential should be heeded.
The chapel was built as a chapel of ease in 1844 by dowager Countess of Bridgewater.
A compact five-bay nave and chancel under one, steeply pitched, slate roof, with projecting gabled south porch. The bays are marked by single pointed lancet windows containing clear, diamond-leaded glazing, with two-stage buttresses between each bay and at the angles. A west bell turret containing two bells at the west end stands above two lancets. At the east end, a stone cross finial sits above the elevation which is also pierced by two lancets with a quatrefoil above.
The stone walls have a shallow plinth, deep stone eaves and raised corbels. The porch has a trefoil in the gable and a hoodmould around the door. A column framing the arch on one side, is missing on the other. There are small lancets in the outer walls. The structure is matched in design on the north side, without a doorway, and contains the vestry, with a chimney rising from the east wall.

There is one step up into porch and the chancel is differentiated from the nave by a raise in level by one step, with the sanctuary raised by another, and the altar on a further step. The main trusses of the roof rest on stone corbels between the bays. Suspended modern electric light fittings.
