St Dunstan's is a large medieval grade I listed church with Tudor connections. It is claimed that four successive English sovereigns worshipped here: Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I. The church houses a number of important and historic monuments and memorials.
Building is open for worship
Footprint of Church buildings: 365 m²
The north wall of the nave is thought to be twelth century, with the remains of frescos depicting the Seven Deadly Sins seen over the doorway. Sir William Oldhall practically rebuilt the church during the mid fifteenth century. The side chapels are sixteenth century. The church is predominately stone with North Chapel a later addition in brick.
The Chester and Calvert memorials have been moved several times, the latest in 1911 to their present positions on the north and south walls of the nave. The South Chapel was probably built by John Carey, 3rd Lord Hunsdon, in 1610 or 1616. It contains the large standing wall monument of alabaster to John Carey and his wife. Some of the family pews with their Jacobean decoration are still there. On the north side of the chancel is a standing wall monument to Sir Thomas Forster lying in his judges robes. He died in 1612. The rails around the Forster tomb are identical to those around Mary Queen of Scot’s tomb in Westminster Abbey.
