The church is situated about 1 mile northwest of the present centre of the village in an isolated location at the bottom of a very steep hill. There are no known records giving the date of the foundation of the church at Lytchett Matravers. The tower is the oldest part of the building – the arch dates from about 1200 whilst the pinnacles, which are carved with the Maltravers fret, are circa 1500.

There are no known records giving the date of the foundation of the church at Lytchett Matravers.
The lower two thirds of the tower date back to the C13, the chancel to C14 and the remainder was rebuilt c 1500. Following a period when it fell into disrepair, it was restored and a vestry added c 1875.
In 1993 an extension was added on the north side to give a toilet, sink, robing area and first floor storage space.
The walls are built of ironstone rubble. The nave and aisle roofs are tiled with clay tiles, while the chancel, vestry and porch rooves are slated, all with coped gables.
The nave has a north aisle of 4 bays, a south porch and the west tower. The chancel has a vestry to the north.
The tower is in 2 stages, the upper part having been added to house the bells. It has a partly battlemented parapet with corner pinnacles. It has three stage clasping buttresses to the lower section. There are small lancet windows to the belfry. The lower section has a small rectangular window in the north wall, and, in the west wall, a trefoil-headed lancet. There is also a shallow central buttress.
The south wall of the nave has three 3-light windows with round-headed lights, and solid panelled tracery. There is an oval recess below the western window. The porch has a shallow 4-centred arch with a projecting stone cross over. The inner door to the porch has a 4-centred arch and C18 panelled door.
The south wall of the chancel has a 2-light C14 window and a re-set 2-light C13 window with deep cut mouldings internally. There are angle buttresses to the chancel. The east window is c 1500, is square-headed, of 3 lights with straight-sided heads. The north window, also c 1500, is of 2 lights.
