Domesday records the Church holding a substantial amount of land at Westbury. The present church building was built in the fourteenth century, undoubtedly on the site of a previous timber Norman church although there is no archaeological evidence of this. It is constructed of local limestone in a style transitional between decorated and perpendicular.
Building is open for worship
Footprint of Church buildings: 774 m²
It is constructed of local limestone in a style transitional between decorated and perpendicular. The plan form is the traditional cruciform with a central tower with the addition of chapels in the north-east (1361) and south-east corners (1400) and to the west of the north transept (1438).
The nave is wide with four high arches to each of the side aisles which are processional only. The nave roof was originally steeply pitched but the eaves were raised by the insertion of clerestory windows (early 15c) to allow more light into the building. Doors at the south and north sides and the west end. There is a large west window and windows to the north and south sides. A west gallery was constructed in 1814 but was removed in 1847. The walls were cleaned of lime wash in 1847 exposing the light honey coloured stonework.
The tower is the oldest part of the construction and is some 84 feet high. At its base it is pierced by high arches to the east and west and lower ones to the north and south. From a spiral staircase in the north east corner access is gained to the ringing chamber, the bell chamber, an upper chamber which was once used as a watchman’s accommodation, evidenced by a fireplace and chimney, and finally to the tower roof.
The chancel and sanctuary have been rebuilt on several occasions, most recently in 1863 when an exposed timber roof was installed. The Lady Chapel to the south of the chancel was built as a chantry chapel shortly after the main building was erected. It was rebuilt in the fifteenth century. The vestry to the north side of the chancel was also built as a chantry chapel in the fourteenth century. It has an east window and two north windows, two arches to the chancel and one to the north aisle. The Chapel of the Holy Name was a chantry chapel built out from the north aisle west of the north transept in the fifteenth century.
