The church as seen today bears the marks of a continuous pattern of change, in line with the demands of each particular period. As far as is known there have been three buildings on the site of the present church. The first was a 13th century building, of which only a single window in the south east corner survives. The church was largely rebuilt in the 15th century to reflect the centrality of the sacraments in worship. Surviving from this period are the south and central aisles of the nave and chancel with the porch and parvis and a low tower.

The church was largely rebuilt in the 15th century to reflect the centrality of the sacraments in worship. Surviving from this period are the south and central aisles of the nave and chancel with the porch and parvis and a low tower.
The church interior was remodelled in 1710 to reflect changing doctrinal emphasis. The rood screen was removed and a heavy oak screen installed to divide the chancel from the nave. The altar was moved to the east wall and all pews turned to face the pulpit on the south wall. A gallery (now demolished) was added at the west end and the present ribbed wooden ceiling installed. Further rearrangement was done in 1823.
1869/71 brought a major rebuilding and extension programme undertaken by the celebrated architect George Street. The north wall was demolished and a new north aisle and sacristy added. A taller tower was also built, the box pews and galleries were removed and the font placed under the tower. In 1921 this area became a choir vestry and the font moved to its present position by the door. In 1941 the south aisle became a lady chapel, further enhanced by the installation in 1982 of a screen obtained from a redundant church. The interior of the church was repainted in 1977 with major roof restoration undertaken a few years later.
After a small fire and considerable smoke damage the church was cleaned and redecorated in 2012 as part of a major refurbishment project
