The Collegiate Church of St Peter and St Paul was founded in 1431 by Sir Reginald Cobham. There were preceding churches dating back to late Saxon times but the present fabric has obliterated its antecedents. The fabric remains largely as its 15th century foundation. The most significant interventions have been the 19th century. It is a remarkably comprehensive example of the perpendicular style as filtered down to parish churches.
Building is open for worship
Footprint of Church buildings: 731 m²
The fabric consists of a massive nave continuous into the chancel and abbreviated sanctuary, a north aisle along the full length of the nave/chancel and a south aisle terminating at its west end at the tower base and at its east, approximate to the (absent) chancel arch.
The most significant interventions have been the 19th century additions of a single storey vestry at the east end of the south aisle and the introduction of a turret midway along the north aisle.
The external fabric is in dressed Wealdon sandstone. Later alterations have been finely wrought and blend seamlessly with the historic body, to the extent that it is hard to distinguish even on close inspection between 15th century and later work.

Internally, the significant additions have been a west end ‘narthex’ or meeting room linking to a kitchen on the north side and toilets to the south.
Other structural interventions have included the formation of an east end undercroft with concrete soffits to the nave and south chapel sanctuaries, massive buttressing of the tower and extensive 1970s reinforcements to the heads of the arcades.
The arcades are attenuated and crowned with an inflated Tudor arched oak roof structure of the highest significance.
Central in the chancel stands the 15th century tomb of Sir Reginald Cobham and his second wife, Anne. The tomb is surrounded by contemporary choir stalls, incorporating carved misericords.
The east end of the church is fitted with 15th century oak screens.
The nave pews are 20th century.
