Inside the church Hawksmoor created the biggest single unsupported roof of its time over a spacious and broad interior – the length is 1.3 times the church's width. Hawksmoor was able to employ the very best and – thanks to Greenwich royal palace and Deptford dockyards nearby, local – early eighteenth-century craftsman including Grinling Gibbons for the woodwork, Jean Tijou for the altar screen and Sir James Thornhill for the trompe l'oeil painting behind the altar.
