Consecrated in 1892, St. John the Divine replaced the Norman (1115) Church of St Mary’s, which is located in an isolated position on the periphery of the village. The new church of St. John the Divine was built by Robert Millington Knowles in memory of his wife and eldest son. The building work was carried out by Messrs Bell and Sons, designed by Arthur Brevill, and was consecrated on 2 August 1892 by the Bishop of Southwell.
The Church is built in high quality ashlar white stone using the early perpendicular style. The building is cruciform in shape, with the altar to the east, and with a spire central to the crossing.
The Church has two side aisles and a central aisle, and is illuminated by converted hanging oil lamps. The windows to each aisle are two short triple lancet with trefoil decoration. Three stone steps lead up through the chancel arch which has low carved oak panels either side, and the pulpit (presented by Major George Baynton Davy, formerly of Colston Bassett Hall) stands to the right. Victorian quarry tiles of various patterns cover the floors. A carved oak screen to the north of the chancel separates the chancel from the Lady Chapel (the north chapel).
