WWI
For many years the worshippers at St. Mary's, Merrymeet had aimed at beautifying their little misson church by providing a stained glass chancel window and sometime after the armistice, it was decided to carry the scheme through as a memorial to the 22 men of the parish of Menheniot who fell in the war. The result is a credit to all concerned and especially to Mr E. Downing (lay reader) and Mrs Downing who took the leading part in raising the money - about £200 - much of which was obtained in a sale of work The window is a three-light one, the central depicting the Church Triumphant with Christ enthroned and the Blessed Virgin, as the Patronal Saint and Mother of Christ, is shown underneath. St Joseph and St. John the Divine, the foster-father and the apostle of love, appear on the right, and St. John the Baptist (the preacher of repentance) and St. Mary Magdalene, as the type of true repentance, are seen on His left. The dove, as a symbol of the Holy Spirit, together with angels, as ever-ready messengers of Christ and mankind, appear in the upper lights, while at the base are depicted angels in adoration.
