The church of St Peter is the parish church of Huddersfield. The present building is the third on this site, the original being a Norman foundation, which was then replaced in the sixteenth century. A phase of wholesale rebuilding followed in 1834 but reused materials from the previous structure. The present design was completed by J P Pritchett of York, who later designed Huddersfield Railway Station as well as the nearby Lion Building. St Peter’s is in the perpendicular style and contains stained glass by Sir Ninian Comper. The church’s churchyard now forms public space next to the building and is known as St Peter’s Gardens. The church is of high significance, reflected in its Grade II* listing.
