Footprint of Church buildings: 1176 m²
The building of the first permanent church came in 1841-5. Dedicated to St. Peter, the architect was John Tulloch of Wimborne. In 1845 the Revd, Alexander Morden Bennett was appointed Perpetual Curate and, from that moment, the, expansion of Bournemouth into a flourishing seaside town, and the building up of its religious life went hand in hand. Bennett's first building enterprise at St Peter's was to add a new south aisle. This was built in 1851, to the design of Edmund Pierce. In 1853 Bennett commissioned G.E. Street to build a much larger church - the building to be sprelad over a fairly long period of time, as the population increased and more money became available. Street first added the nave and north aisle leaving the south aisle intact. The choir and sanctuary, transepts, and chancel chapels followed in 1860-4.
A noteworthy feature of the exterior is the polychromatic use of different stones in the clerestorey. The tower and spire form a focal townscape point within Bournemouth.

Inside the proportions are good and paintings by Clayton and Bell above the chancel arch and in the spandrels of the arcades help to unify architectural space and prevent it from seeming over long. A most distinctive feature of the interior is the Western narthex, rather like the ante-chapel to a college chapel, with its great arch separating it from the nave - a reminiscence of Bristol cathedral, where Street had rebuilt the nave.
The comparative austerity of the nave leads on to the great richness and splendour of the eastern parts of the church: The sanctuary roof is rib-vaulted, and that of the choir has a wooden-barrel vault: both were decorated by Bodley (1891) in his characteristic colours, with censing angels and stars on the Vault of the sanctuary.
