Romsey Abbey church is one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in southern England, and is a member of the Greater Churches Network Dedicated to St Mary and St Ethelflæda, an Abbess of Romsey at the time of the first millennium, it was a nunnery until the Reformation, and its Abbesses included members of the royal family. The large Grade 1 listed church stands within a large open churchyard, and is the focal point of this attractive small town, which also boasts the Medieval St Johns Hall, as well as attractions related to the Mountbatten family. The church is particularly famous for its two Saxon Roods (carved stone depictions of the Crucifixion), one presently outside the church and the other at the east end. The church is open during the day, and the town has many catering outlets.
