Probably first built between 1066 and 1076 the church has a complex architectural history. Originally a cruciform church with a central crossing tower it had by the late 14th or early 15th century become rectangular.
In the late 12th century aisles were built and the chancel enlarged: in the 13th century north and south chapels were added and from this period date two trefoiled piscinas, one in the north chapel, the other against the north wall of the tower in what was originally the transept. About 1400 the aisles and chapels were widened, thereby absorbing the transepts.
About 1400 the aisles and chapels were widened, thereby absorbing the transepts. Four windows in the north aisle and chapel are probably late 14th century and have much of their original tracery. The west doorway, flat-arched in a square frame, is 15th century, In the chancel is a particularly attractive piscina of about 1400, ogee-arched with crockets and pinnacles. About 1500 a chantry chapel was added to the south of the south chapel but of this only a blocked arch remains. Between 1828 and 1829 alterations were made by Francis Goodwin, primarily to allow galleries to be constructed: the aisles were heightened, the north aisle was extended west level with the nave and the mediaeval nave arcades replaced by slender, plastered arcades in the Perpendicular Style.
In 1872 the galleries were removed and the plaster stripped from the walls. Goodwin's slender, tall arcades against the whitened rubble walls are an effective foil to the austere tower arches. The upper part of the tower was rebuilt in the Middle Ages and the small bell-stage lights date from 1877, when the stone spire which had replaced a mediaeval one in 1732 was heightened by nine feet.
The base of the original tower remains; the round arches, built of smooth-faced irregularly jointed stone and of a single order, are without decoration. The Norman nave was as wide as the present nave; part of its west wall survives, with flat buttresses which were originally at the angles of the unaisled church.

The arcades are of two chamfered orders, the inner orders resting on concave-sided octagonal capitals supported by face and foliage capitals. Similar corbels and capitals terminate the shafts which rise to support the beam-ends of the spindly roof.
Font (object)
1170
One of only six Tournai marble fonts in England. It has a large square bowl decorated with twelve round panels: eleven are filled with grotesque figures with turned heads, gnashing teeth and (in most instances) wings. The twelfth panel has a crude representation of a man.
