Recent additional research, not available for the 2018 edition of Pevsner and through research of 19th century newspapers and other sources, has provided significant information about fixtures and fittings within the church for which no other record amongst the church archives seems to exist.
George Gilbert Scott who designed the church constructed in 1867-68 also designed fixtures and fittings installed in 1872. He designed the polished stone base to the chancel screen very similar to the original stone base to the former screen at Hereford Cathedral now at the V&A.
Scott also designed the screen’s metal-work, the oak choir stalls, the arrangement for the altar (potentially including the surviving 1872 embroidery frontal panels). The lower three panels of the reredos with their mosaic inserts, originally surmounted by a cross in Derbyshire alabaster, also with mosaic inserts, was designed by Scott. The cross was removed and inserted into the north wall of the church on the east side of the north door when the reredos was heightened with a sculptured figure of Christ ascending.
The 1872 works were commissioned by Sarah Pearce from George Gilbert Scott, in memory of her Husband Robert Pearce and her brother Martin Maddison of the Pearce and Maddison Southampton banks and banking families.
The foundation stone for the completion of the church, to Scott’s original designs was laid by Mary Sumner (daughter of a banker) in 1889. Mary Sumner is better known for founding the ‘Mothers Union’. The works of completion and paying off the loans for the church building, as reported in the press at that time, were specifically undertaken by the women of Portswood and St Denys.
