Font (component)
Medieval Canon Clarke wrote that 'The famous font is more or less a pair of the one at Southrop...Norman sculpture that is well executed, intelligible, & sensible.' He noted that M. D. Anderson thought both fonts were the product of a great monastery’s workshop because of iconographic peculiarities (including a 6-winged seraph with a sword = the Fall of man) connect with Worcester. Clarke thought the carver of the fonts may even have copied his design from an enamelled reliquary decorated with a Psychomachia, like the 12-century English casket now in the Treasury of the Cathedral of Troyes. The figures are clearly labelled: Ecclesia serpen occiditur; Cherubin: Largitas trampling on Avaritia; Humilitas on Superbia; Pietas on Discordia: Misericordia on Invidia; Modestia on Ebriatas: Temperantia on Luxuria: Pacificia on Ira: & Pudicitia on Libido. Some illustrations show the font raised on C14th stem, which was removed before 1865: the present very simple base was designed by R.H. Carpenter.
