Ground plan:
West belcote, 2-bay nave, 1-bay chancel, south-west porch and north-east vestry.
Dimensions:
14m (43ft) by 5.8m (18ft).
The church was built in 1662-3 by Sir Philip Musgrave as a chapel-of-ease to Kirby Stephen. Renovations were undertaken in 1774, when the north vestry was perhaps added, and again in 1863, when the fenestration and interior furnishings and fittings were gothicised and the south porch added. The king-post roof was also reconstructed using the original timbers at this time. The ceiling was inserted in 1963, from which time the pendant globe lights appear to date. The building and site are of considerable archaeological potential, and the Sites and Monuments Record (SMR) should be consulted before any development is considered.
This is a compact and simple church, originally a simple box, restored in a Decorated Gothic style. A little vertical emphasis is given by the small belcote at the west end, which has simple pointed openings, stone louvres, stumpy pinnacles and an elaborate gilded weathercock with the Musgrave arms and the date 1830. The church has coped gables and moulded kneelers. The rainwater goods are of lead and of good quality, with moulded gutters. There is a ball finial at the east end.
The west end is blind and rendered. The south porch is extremely plain, a gabled front with cross finial over a chamfered round-headed external entrance reflecting the inner doorway. The original inner entrance has an arched head with continuous mouldings. It has a plank door. There is a square stone plaque in the wall above the porch with a carved coat of arms above the initials PM (Philip Musgrave) and date 1663. The nave windows (two in each wall) are square-headed 2-lights with cusped heads, while the east window is a pointed 3-light with Decorated tracery. The vestry has a 2-light rectangular window in the east wall.
