Probably a virgin site, there is no evidence of any archaeological finds during the church's construction in 1903-4 under Canon Walter Wanstall. It was consecrated by Bishop Edward King and largely funded by Alfred Shuttleworth, a local industrialist.
The church is built in red brick with stone dressings, slate roofs and a central wooden and tiles fleche. The church's north aisle faces Monk's Road with the main entrance being the porch at the north west corner. A small bellcote is hidden on the south west of the building forming a link to the former church halls.
