The church at Tydd St Mary is a large late medieval building of high architectural, historic and archaeological significance. The fifteenth century west steeple made of brick is a real landmark in this fen area. Pipistrelle species and Brown long-eared bats use the church for feeding and possibly hibernation, with pipistrelles also using it as a maternity roost.

Tydd St Mary is a large late-medieval church but there is evidence of a twelfth century predecessor and both nave arcades are of the early thirteenth century. The nave and aisle roofs are late-medieval or seventeenth century but the huge nave tie beams might be older. The west steeple is an impressive landmark in this fen area, made more interesting for being of brick, also the material of the clerestorey. Although there is little medieval sculptural embellishment, the large churchyard has many pre-nineteenth century headstones on the south side. More modern materials are present on the north where there is a well-used footpath. The fabric and site are therefore of high archaeological, architectural and historical significance.
The later fifteenth century octagonal font (the only medieval fitting), the incised alabaster stone to William de Tidde and the two eighteenth-century Trafford wall memorials are of high significance. Two more eighteenth century memorials are of moderate-high significance. Otherwise, the fittings are good work of 1869 and of moderate to high significance for their quality and completeness. The stained glass is by national firms, but, as Pevsner says, ‘nothing special’ and so of moderate significance. The floors are of low-moderate significance.
