Stow Minster is one of the oldest historic parish churches of Lincolnshire, the site of Christian worship since at least the early 11th century. The Grade 1 listed church building is almost 1000 years old in parts, and is one of the major examples of Romanesque architecture in the country, with more Anglo-Saxon and Norman masonry than any other Lincolnshire church. It was considered the ‘finest Norman church in Lincolnshire’ by the poet and antiquarian Sir John Betjeman. The church was restored by the famous Victorian architect John Loughborough Pearson, who built the impressive vaulted nave ceiling. It is located in a small village 15 miles north of Lincoln, and visitors are often surprised by the grandeur of this large church in the middle of open countryside. This is explained by its former status as a Minster, or regional mother church for this part of the diocese. The church is open every day and there is a pub which serves food in the village. A visit can be combined with other historic churches in the area, including Coates St Edith, a beautiful little Medieval church with a sublime interior.
