St Peter’s church is located in St Peter’s Avenue, in the centre of Cleethorpes Town. It is surrounded by mixed developments of shops and private houses. The Avenue is relatively busy, being one of the main shopping streets. The church is a prominent landmark, and the tower is visible from the promenade. The church was constructed in 1864-6. The plan consists of nave, aisles, chancel, south porch, narthex at the west end and tower (constructed in 1867) in the north-east corner of the building. The architect was James Fowler of Louth. The church is listed Grade II; the listing entry appears in Appendix 1. A further description can be found in the Lincolnshire volume of Pevsner’s Buildings of England series, reproduced below: ST PETER, St Peter’s Avenue. The parish church of Cleethorpes. 1864-6 by James Fowler. Clerestoried nave with aisles, chancel and S chapel, and a NE tower. Lancet bell-openings. The details are E.E. to Dec. Stone outside, genteel and rather advanced-looking, but inside with four-bay arcades of brick. The arches have alternate blocks of ashlar painted white, and the arrises of the outer order are cut away and made spiky. Foliage capitals. Organ chamber and vestry added in 1908. – STAINED GLASS. E window 1882 by Clayton & Bell. – N aisle W by Heaton, Butler & Bayne, 1910. – S aisle SE 1937 by A. K Nicholson.
