All Saints’ Church consists of a nave, north aisle, south aisle, aisled chancel, south-west tower and north porch. The building was begun in 1395 by Archbishop Courtenay as a collegiate church and then continued by Archbishop Arundel in 1396-98. The spire was struck by lightning in 1730 and never rebuilt. The church was restored in 1886 by John Loughborough Pearson.
Building is open for worship
Footprint of Church buildings: 1607 m²
The church is entered through the north porch, which is a stone structure with a vaulted roof and timber doors on the interior and exterior. The internal doors lead to a point near to the west end of the north aisle. To the west of the point of entry the first bay has been separated from the rest of the aisle by the relocation of the former chancel screen. The space enclosed provides kitchenette facilities and a small gift shop. The remainder of the aisle is fully pewed although a reordering at the east end has provided a small chapel for the use of the Men of Kent. The westernmost one and a half bays of the nave are cleared of fixed seating providing an area of general circulation space. The font is located in this area along the principle east west access of the church. A small portable pipe organ is located in this area. The remainder of the nave is extensively pewed although a small number of pews have been relocated from the east end to provide an area of flexible space by the chancel steps. The west end of the south aisle is also cleared of fixed seating and part of the space is used as an area of storage for a moveable stage and a number of stackable chairs. The remainder of the south aisle is extensively pewed. A small chapel has been created at the east end of this aisle and fitted out with simple timber furnishings and wooden panelling on the walls. The chancel, approached via a flight of steps, is separated from its aisles by glazed timber screens which appear to date from the 20th century. It is furnished with medieval stalls which include a fine set of misericords. The sanctuary is furnished with a large timber altar, clergy stall and other moveable seating. To the south is a large stone sedilia incorporating to the rear the monument 2 of the first master of the college. The altar rails are executed in metal. There is a large and imposing reredos at the east end obscuring most of the east window. At the west end of the south chancel aisle are located the organ and console. A door leads through to the large vestry area. The tomb of John Wotton, which backs on to the chancel sedilia, includes wall paintings of the early 15th century. The chancel aisle on the north side provides an area of flexible space and has a sanctuary at its east end. This is furnished with a carved wooden altar, wooden reredos with triptych and metal rails. A number of moveable upholstered chairs are located in this aisle. Both of the chancel aisles are separated from the main aisles by a flight of stone steps and timber screens.
