Description of Archaeology and History
The archaeological potential of the site is low. Local heritage environment records report a searchlight battery in the north-east corner of the churchyard dating to WWII, and some ship wrecks in the creek to the south. The site is identified as being within a landscape character area identified for its historic farming settlements.
The chapel was built in 1872 in memory of ‘Ludovicae Phillpotts’ 1872. Henry Phillpotts was Bishop of Exeter which encompassed Cornwall from 1830 until his death in 1869; William John Phillpotts was vicar at St Gluvias 1845 until 1889. No further information has been found.
Penryn is a historic town with the core made up of 17th to 19th century buildings still following its dense 13th century street pattern. The town was developed by Bishop Brewer of Exeter in the early 13th century and which was home to Glasney College, one of England’s earliest collegiate churches and an important Cornish religious institution, until the Dissolution. The town continued to thrive as a port and shipbuilders yard, with ships busy with oysters, fish, granite, coal and tin.

All windows are blocked from the interior (so tracery remains externally) though a gap has been left to show a depression in the space where the windows were. Tin painted with text are fixed above each window and also the inner wall of the outer porch arch. A basic partition has been erected across the western-most bay. No seating. The east end is raised by a single step and paved in contrast to the paved floors of the main area.
