A low slung, long, church that sits on a slope that is overlooked by William Rufus's castle. The lead roofs appear to bend as the building flows across the landscape. The church has Norman origins that can be seen in the south wall, particularly the splendid south door with its chevron decoration and beakhead faces that is accompanied by a C12 window. This wall batters into the nave creating an interesting visual conjunction with the floor as it rises towards the chancel where the church moves up the slope of the hill. There are remnants of C13 walls in the chancel, this includes a hagioscope through which the altar could be seen. The north wall of the nave was removed in the C14 and a north aisle added, possibly following partial destruction during one of the border raids on the neighbouring castle. All that remains from this phase is the fine arcade and part of the east wall. It was, however, the start of the gradual rebuilding of the church that spanned almost the whole of the Perpendicular period. This includes the construction of the tower that has lost its signature pinnacles, the insertion of the flat topped windows and the construction of the rugged timber ceiling. The church houses a C17 pulpit, an early C18 communion rail and attractive stained glass including a fragment of a C15 window. The east window is a good example of later Wailes work. Recently the church has been sensitively adapted to provide modern facilities and an exhibition space.
