This is a fascinating church that has undergone substantial change since the early C13, but has retained a combination of both tantalising and substantial evidence of its past history. The scarce early C13 remains suggest a central crossing with a tower that was replaced in the late early C16 by a square parapeted Perpendicular tower at the west end that was lime rendered, scraped back to stone in the C19, and recently re-covered to its original appearance. The tower probably coincides with the construction of the porch (dated 1607) and the north and south aisles, the latter including an early C15 reset window. The splendid nave and aisle roofs are late C15/earlyC16. The shallow pitched nave open, undecorated, timber roof with its large tie beams is particularly attractive. The old chancel was demolished and replaced by an Early English style addition designed by Paley & Austin in 1878/9. It visually crushes the nave and introduces a style and shape that has few historic reference points. There are points of interest in the church including a C13 piscina, the bread and records boxes, three C16/C17 bells in crown headstocks, a beautiful Belle Époque stained glass window designed by Beatrix Whistler, the restoration font, the C18 pews that now line the walls of the baptistery, the William III royal cypher and the pulpit that is the surviving top level of a mid-C18 three tier edifice.
