An imposing and classic Georgian church, St Oswald's replaced an earlier medieval building that had fallen into disrepair. The new church was built over a period of six years starting with the tower in 1738. Remnants of the old church survive including the rebuilt C13 porch, the repositioned C13 chancel arch and stone robbed from the adjacent Gilbertine Cell. Its external appearance is of its time with round-headed windows and mock keystones and a parapeted square tower. The rubble walls were lime rendered, leaving the rusticated quoins and window surrounds as exposed stonework. The render was removed in the 1970s on the basis that it appeared grubby the original intention would have been to cover the rough stone with a smooth, light, finish. Its loss is to be regretted. The interior is a revelation. It is laid out collegiate style with the inward facing pews retaining their numbering. The centrally positioned three tier pulpit commands the nave. It includes an attractively decorated sounding board and biblical inscriptions carved around the bottom Clerk's desk. One of the eye-catching painted Ten Commandments, Lord's Prayer and Creed boards originally displayed in the old church remains hung from the nave-facing south-east wall while the other is now hung on the south wall of the chancel. The gallery at the west end includes carved timberwork from the earlier church, including a piece dated 1633. The fine C19 stained glass and medieval font stem add to the charm of the church.
