South Tidworth: St Mary
Overview
Grid reference: SU 235 476
Of small rock- faced brown stone, in a particularly rich interpretation of the Early English style. The church stands in a beautifully kept churchyard and appears to be very well maintained. It is, both viewed from the exterior and judged by the quality of its interior, an extremely complete and homogeneous work of art.

Building
Ground Plan Description and Dimensions
Ground plan:
Nave with aisles, chancel, south transept balanced on north side by the vestry, south porch , bell- tower with spirelet standing on a large mid-wall buttress.
Description of Archaeology and History
1879-80 . By John Johnson.
Exterior Description
From the outside the church does not appear to be very large - no doubt because of its considerable height, compared with the total length of the building and the most prominent, as well as the most graceful, feature of the exterior is the bell turret surmounted by a spirelet. This feature is highly decor ative, and also original in design: it appears to burgeon out from the west wall of the nave, and any feeling of instability is counteracted by the deep buttress which supports it.
Interior
Interior Description
There is no use of exotic marbles and rich carving for their own sake but a very carefully controlled design in which height and well-related proportions play their part - and to which the grey veined marble of the piers supporting the three-bay north and south arcades, the deeply carved stiff-leaf capitals, and the dog-tooth ornament round The the chancel arch and elsewhere merely give added distinction. aisle bays are marked off from one another by steeply rising half arches, and separating the chancel on either side from the organ chamber and the south chapel are large three-light screens, like very large windows: their tracery is geometrical, but with just one trace of Decorated.
