Originally the church seems to have had an aisleless nave, and a chancel of the same width as the existing one but shorter. The north arcade and aisle were built c.1310-20 and, shortly afterwards, the south chancel chapel was added (and the chancel arch rebuilt at the same time). The tower arch is also 14th century, though the tower itself is late 15th century. In the 19th century considerable changes were made.

Ground plan:
West tower, nave with north aisle, chancel with transeptal organ chamber and vestry on south side.
In the 19th century considerable changes were made, the chancel being largely rebuilt and the south chapel (removed in 1834) being replaced by the present organ chamber and vestry in 1869. The nave and north aisle were repaired by G.E. Street in 1871, when much decoration and new fittings were added. To Street, therefore, are probably owed the chancel screen and lectern.
A very pleasing exterior, with two storeys of windows on the south side of the nave: three at the lower, and two at the higher level - the smallest being a Norman (or Norman-style) window, possibly inserted in 1834 to light the reading desk, in the lower level at the east end of the nave. Between this window and the south doorway is a two-light window which is a 19th century copy of a window of c.1320 and, west of the doorway, is a 16th century window of two uncusped lights. The two upper windows on the south side of the nave are either late 15th century or early 16th century, when the nave roof was lowered in pitch and this clerestory made.
The tower is of three stages with an embattled parapet; the belfry windows are of two lights and the west window of three lights, much repaired. The main walls of the fabric are of flint, with limestone for windows and copings.
Roof coverings are of slate (nave), tiles (chancel and organ chamber) and lead (vestry).
Stained Glass
1887
Includes a west window by Kempe
There is a fine Norman south doorway, the arch having elongated lozenges for the inner arch and dogtooth ornament for the outer order. There is also a deeply splayed Norman window in the west wall of the north aisle, presumably re-set when the aisle was rebuilt by G.E. Street in 1871. The north arcade is of three bays, with octagonal piers, pointed arches of two chamfered orders, and moulded capitals.
