A medieval church, restored by J.D. Sedding, 1880-1.
Building is closed for worship
Ground plan:
Nave and chancel, with north-west bell turret and south porch.
A medieval church, restored by J.D. Sedding, 1880-1. Sedding encased the walls of the nave in random stone, renovated most of the windows and added a north-west bell turret with spirelet which is a distinguished example of his work; a niche above the west window contains a statue of Our Lady, for which Sedding was also responsible. The chancel was re-built and no doubt made more dignified than it was before, the altar is raised and has two stone gradines. There is a large five-light east window, probably reproduced from what was there previously.
Inside, the walls are plastered, with traces of medieval masonry-pattern painting. The nave has an ancient (15th or 16th century) roof; the chancel roof is higher and rounded and by Sedding. The west window contains medieval glass in fragments, put there by Sedding. Sedding also restored the 14th century screen, which is painted in dark greens and reds with a Rood beam above, and designed most of the fittings: the font of Cornish serpentine, and its wooden cover, make a particularly fine composition. One of the most delightful features of the interior is the leading which Sedding designed for the windows - themselves of clear glass , sufficiently muted not to be dazzling, yet light enough to show the trees outside. The pattern of the leading in each of these windows is related to the tracery.
