A unique church. The only one to be designed by Philip Webb, built at the same time that he co-founded SPAB in 1878. The church is designed in a free Gothic style with an inventiveness of expression that is at variance with the more structured and disciplined approach of his Gothic Revival contemporaries. St Martin's provides a range of visual experiences that borrow, in part, from his approach to the design of houses. These include the low dark entrance that leads into a volume of light and colour- a device favoured by Arts and Crafts architects - and the distinctly domestic ceiling penetrated along the southern aisle by dormers that wash the building with natural light. The light is reflected off the pale green painted timber ceilings whose variety of planes and shapes add to the distinctive character of the interior. The church was designed as a whole as a simple space without a chancel or a pulpit, one of the centrally positioned clergy stalls acting as a podium. The glory of the church is its stained glass designed by Burne-Jones and made by William Morris. It follows the theme of Worship, the Good Shepherd, Heroes of the Bible, Virtues, Childhood and Paradise. They combine to produce a collection of outstanding Pre-Raphaelite Art. Their composition and gem stone colours introduce a level of quality and splendour that is of great rarity. It includes the famous Pelican window that is acknowledged as a precursor of Art Nouveau.
