The chapel is a delightful essay in alternating brick and flint squares. In addition there is a plinth of flint, a parapet and east and west gables in brick, and quoins at the corners of which is presumably Portland stone.
Building is closed for worship
Ground plan:
A single-cell chapel with a narthex/porch at the west.
Apparently an ancient foundation, but the present building dates from 1612. The porch was added in 1897.
The chapel is a delightful essay in alternating brick and flint squares. In addition there is a plinth of flint, a parapet and east and west gables in brick, and quoins at the corners of which is presumably Portland stone. There are pilasters of brick in the centres of the north and south walls, and the wall beneath the east window is also of brick entirely - and here, incidentally, is plain indication of a bricked up door, which may havered to a small sacristy. The remaining feature to be noticed outside is the eight sided bell-cote towards the west. This is surmounted by a copper-covered cupola, and the whole looks to be of 1963.
Inside the walls are plastered. The principal architectural feature to note is the roof with moulded tie beams. The small arch braces north and south enclose spandrels with cusping. In the sanctuary black and white marble paving survives, with the marks of hard wear.
Reredos
Late 17th Century
Occupying almost the whole of the east wall. There are three divisions: those at the side have panels with the Lord's Prayer and Creed over which are strongly projecting triangular pediments. In the centre twisting Salamonic columns with Corinthian capitals support a broken pediment from the centre of which rises an immensely tall urn with gilded flames. Beneath the urn is a cartouche, with pendant drops, and then in the main part of the centre compartment are panels bearing the Commandments. At the sides are further cartouches with pendant swags.
Stall
1897
The body of the chapel is furnished with a double row of stalls nofth and south college chapel-wise. These are richly carved in an early 17th century manner, but no doubt date from the restoration of 1897.
Font (object)
17th Century
The stem which is octagonal and panelled, may have been renewed. It supports a circular bowl which is certainly 17th century with a frieze of carved flowers and foliage.
Font (component)
17th Century
The cover is domical ( like the 'Bohemian cap' in shape) with the same motif carved in low relief. An urn, on a done-shaped base, is the finial.
Chandelier
An eight-branch chandelier.
