Built to replace a 12th century church which stood 200 yards to the south beside the Old Pilgrims' Way from Winchester to Canterbury, where it crossed the River Itchen by a ford to Ovington.
Building is closed for worship
Ground plan:
An aisleless nave of four bays, polygonal apse, western narthex (which contains the font from an earlier church), bell-cote on the eastern gable of the nave and a small vestry on the north.
By Henry Conybeare, 1866. (The building cost 17,000 - paid for by the incumbent, the Revd. Charles Conybeare). Built to replace a 12th century church which stood 200 yards to the south beside the Old Pilgrims' Way from Winchester to Canterbury, where it crossed the River Itchen by a ford to Ovington. From the earlier church there survives the 13th century font (in the north chamber of the narthex) and two brasses.
The exterior of the church, particularly when approached from the east, is a positive tour de force. The obvious antecedents are the Lady Chapel of St. Germer de Fly and the Sainte Chapelle in Paris. The apse is five-sided with five very tall windows of two principal lights and a rose in the apex: each bay has its own gable and the apse, which is vaulted inside, is covered by a conical roof. Behind the apse, on the eastern gable of the steeply pitched nave roof, is a tall bell-cote. The nave is of four bays, each with three lancets, and a large rose in the west wall. Entrance is through .a western narthex, in the form of a vaulted lobby, which consists of two chambers on either side of the entrance with diapered walls and a doorway with a tall gable and marble and granite columns.
Lofty inside: the west wall has two tiers of blank arcading below the rose and the font stands immediately inside the west entrance. The north and south walls have plaster diapering below window till level and all the windows are shafted. The furnishings are all of high quality; and integral with the building, and the complete series of glass mosaic in the windows and the painted decoration of the ceiling are particularly impressive. The centre aisle of the nave, the area round the font and the space in front of the sanctuary are pavedwith very fine tiles, and the circular sanctuary has a tiled 'maze' after the Chartres pattern.
