St Paul's was designed by John Dobson in a modified Gothic style. It was built in 1845 to provide an additional place of worship for the growing populations of Wetheral and Warwick Bridge The site is does not form part of any settlement and was probably chosen where it could be seen from Holme Eden Hall, the home of Peter Dixon and also designed by Dobson, who paid for its construction. The church, particularly its stone spire, would have formed an important component in the magnificent picturesque landscape. This no doubt appealed to Dobson who had trained and practiced as a landscape gardener. He incorporated both Norman motifs with the massive semi-circular double sanctuary arch decorated with chevrons and round headed windows in the nave and the Perpendicular fashioned elements in the tower with the stylised clasping buttresses, and pointed lucernes and arch widows. St Paul's is a crisply designed building that has an interior that provides a deceptively large volume of unimpeded and well lit space that terminates to the east in the vaulted sanctuary that frames and draws the eye to the stained glass windows and west into the tower through a high arched Georgian style window. Most of the remaining windows are plain glass. The roof was boarded in the early C20 following the partial collapse of the plaster ceiling. This tightens and visually suppresses the sense of space. An attractive stained glass war memorial is fixed to the wall, the only other decorations being wall mounted memorial plaques and the Royal insignia.
