Description of Archaeology and History
The chancel, which is all that survives of the old church, appears to have been rebuilt in the late eighteenth century. The architect is not known.
Exterior Description
It is a simple rectangle built entirely of brick laid in Flemish bond and probably dating from the late eighteenth century. The west wall is covered with stucco and is probably mostly mediaeval. At the north and south angles are buttresses parallel with the west wall which are presumably constructed from the remains of the east wall of the nave. A depression in the ground to the west marks the site of the nave, north aisle and tower. On the other three walls the brickwork remains exposed, rising to a simple cornice of bricks set diagonally at the wallhead which may be a reconstruction of c. 1838. when the building may have been made good before being converted to use as a cemetery chapel. The south wall has a large round-headed window with a stone surround and keystone which has lost all its tiber frame and fittings. The east wall has a smaller window-of similar deeign which has long been blocked. The north wall is blind. The roof was a low-pitched construction with a hipped gable, at the east and a gable above the doorway at the west.
