A small mediaeval church built of flint rubble with stone dressings.
Building is closed for worship
Ground plan:
Nave, chancel, south aisle, south porch and west tower.
A small mediaeval church built of flint rubble with stone dressings. The embattled tower is unbuttressed and dates from c.1300.
The short nave has a south aisle of two bays with an octagonal pier and double-chamfered arches. The angle piscina in the aisle dates from c.1300 and it is possible that the arcade is of the same date, although the bases of the piers are obviously later. The plastered and whitened internal walls form a telling contrast to the very fine 15th century timber roof, its wall-posts connected by longitudinal arched braces and with similar braces running up to the roof ridge. There are a few remaining wall plates with carved quatrefoil decoration. A peculiar feature of the nave at Cockthorpe is that the north wall of the nave is entirely blind while, as if to compensate, there is a south clerestorey consisting of three windows each of two lights. The chancel shows evidence of considerable alteration: a doorway in the south wall has been blocked up, and the three-light window at the east end is set within an arch which evidently housed a window of a different type.
