Norwich: St Swithin
Overview
Grid reference: TG 225 88
The church is of flint (brick repairs appearing here and there, adding sparkle and variety to the texture), roofed with lead. Looked at from the south the church is of very modest pretensions: the aisles are of four bays, each with a two-light Decorated window and divided from one another by a buttress; there is a clerestory with flat square Perpendicular windows, one to a bay, with two lights under a typical late Perpendicular square-ended hoodmould.

Building
Ground Plan Description and Dimensions
Ground plan:
Nave and aisles; there is a rood stair turret projecting from the north aisle, and the sanctuary projects eastwards beyond the arcades by a token amount only.
Exterior Description
The church is of flint (brick repairs appearing here and there, adding sparkle and variety to the texture), roofed with lead. Looked at from the south the church is of very modest pretensions: the aisles are of four bays, each with a two-light Decorated window and divided from one another by a buttress; there is a clerestory with flat square Perpendicular windows, one to a bay, with two lights under a typical late Perpendicular square-ended hoodmould. The exterior is enlivened by two features: one is the pretty confectionary of the late 19th century bell-cote at the head of the west gable, all crockets and pinnacles. (This replaced an unbuttressed tower, flanked by lean-to porches north and south, which the City Engineer condemned as unsafe in 1882.)
Interior
Interior Description
A curious feature of the interior is the totally different character ol the two arcades: that on the north is Perpendicular, leans noticeably outwards anointed arches and octagonal piers with slightly concave sides and capitals which follow the same lines; the south arcade is apparently of c.1700, and has square piers - put together like a bundle of four pilasters - and round arches.
