The Temple Church was founded by Robert of Gloucester (son of Henry I) around 1147 when he granted the land to the Knights Templar. The tower dates from 1460. The church was restored in the 19th and early 20th centuries but was destroyed by an incendiary bomb in 1942 during the Second World War.
