A particularly delightful modern church of very unusual character. Designed by John Seely and Paul Paget and built by John Laing and Sons in 1935. The structure of the church is reinforced concrete. The principal roof surfaces are of green Westmoreland slate with copper flashings and dormers. External wall surfaces are of painted render. The church offers a refreshing use of innovating detailing and an integrated design of furnishings and fittings. Original external wall lanterns remain in position although in need of repair. There is a complete set of contemporary oak furnishings and the elegant linked ranks of seating with folding seats are of particular interest. (The oak lectern does not appear to be of the same period.) Bold and simple use of stained glass is to be found in the three lancets of the Lady Chapel and the circular window above the altar. This church is a rare and important example in Carlisle of 1930's architecture.
