The principal characteristics of St. Cuthberts church are its largely unaltered Georgian style with gallery on three sides and classical detailing. It is rare to find a Georgian church so little altered during the Victorian period. Walls and tower are of red sandstone with projecting chamfered quoins and lintels. The stonework has been extensively de-scaled and re-dressed (1980s?). The lead roof to the tower is of reticulated profile surmounted by an ornate weather vane above a gilded orb. The date on the weathervane, 1778, is the date of possibly the fourth re-building of the church on its site immediately adjacent to the Cathedral close. The site of the church is reputed to date from the 5th Century. The church is now normally accessed from the south side via a narthex from which stairs rise to the galleries. The church is embellished with numerous memorial plaques to the walls. Well proportioned rectangular windows framed with projecting stone jambs, lintels and cills provide a very light interior. Many of the windows openings host commemorative stained glass panels. Interior fixtures and fittings have been altered over time with a particularly large moveable pulpit on rails built locally in 1905. Lighting pendants in the Art Deco style of the 1930s are a surprising but entirely successful addition.
