A centrally located church in Chester. Medieval origins, though substantial rebuilding projects took place in the 19th century. Now closed and used as arts centre.
Building is closed for worship
Ground plan:
Chancel, north-east and south-east chapels, clerestoried nave, aisles, west tower.
14th century work remains in the chancel and the lower part of the tower, though the church was largely rebuilt in the latter part of the 15th century, and is predominently Perpendicular in character. Much of the masonry inside, and virtually all of it outside, is 19th century, during which period the church was twice restored by architects of more than ordinary ability and sensitivity in 1860-2 by James Harrison of Chester, and in 1890-1 by J. P. Seddon. The only external stonework of early date is that of the lower stage of the tower, where there is a Tudor west doorway, now much decayed. The upper part of the door is of 1860-62. The south-east chapel was rebuilt c. 1690, but the only recognisable features of this date are the responds of the arch on the south side of the chancel.
Stained Glass
There is some late Perpendicularglass in the tracery of the south chapel east window. It includes heraldic work and a series of Passion shields. There is also some good Victorian glass, including work by H. Hughes, Wailes, George Hedgland, Ward & Hughes and Shrigley & Hunt.
Inside, the carved grotesques and other details of the reveals of the south aisle windows are original. The finest structural feature is the nave roof a splendid panelled camber beam roof, with richly carved and gilded bosses, said to have been brought here from Basingwerk Abbey in 1535.
