Edgbaston: St James
Overview
Grid reference: SP 61 854
St. James is impressively sited on rising ground and when viewed from the south-east it is possible to appreciate the grouping of the tower as it rises between the gables of the south transept and the vestry. The dominant external feature is the wide expanse of tiled roof, into which, at a later date, four dormer windows were introduced to relieve its severe lines and to give additional light to the interior. The church is of brick with brown sandstone facings, partly coursed and partly random: the dressings and the cap of the low spire are of limestone.

The top stage of the three stage tower is octagonal with alternate one and two light openings with tre- foiled heads. In the octagonal spire are four louvres.
Building Fabric and Features
Stained Glass
In the south transept are two small, good stained glass windows depicting St. Augustine and St. Chad. These are probably contemporary with the church.
Interior
Interior Description
Inside, the walls are plastered and whitened. The nave is extremely broad and is dominated by the alternate hammer-beam and scissor truss roof. A typical Teulon feature is the internal buttress to the tower which protrudes into the nave. Each transept has a small chapel on the east wall: arcading separates the chapels from the rest of the transepts. Rose windows in the north and south walls light the transepts.
