St. John's is a close contemporary of St. Michael's Stanwix, and it has been assumed that it was a copy of St. Michael's. Both churches have some characteristics in common, notably the pinnacles to the corners of the tower which are repeated above the corner buttresses to the Nave. The interior was remodelled in 1901 by C.J. Ferguson and it is likely that the carved oak pulpit, lectern and sanctuary rail date from this period. The roof trusses span a very wide nave without aisles. The trusses are exposed and with a varnished pitch pine ceiling. Unusually for the Carlisle area the stonework is of a light buff sandstone reputedly from the Shalk Quarry (presumably the lower beds). Windows are by Cleator & Sons, London, 1897.
