Description of Archaeology and History
Designed by John Thornhill. Foundation stone laid in 1764; consecrated 1769 as a chapel-of-ease to Sunderland, Holy Trinity.

The result of a major reordering is curiously more like a Victorianised 17th century interior than a Georgian one and makes nonsense of the three tiers of windows in the north and south walls - which were to light the upper and lower galleries and the space beneath.
