Building
Ground Plan Description and Dimensions
Ground plan:
Five bay nave with north and south aisles, chancel terminating in a polygonal apse, north and south chancel chapels (that on the north a vestry, that on the south forming an organ chamber).
Exterior Description
Built of yellow stock brick. The west end of the nave is steeply gabled, with a small stone bell-cote and a bare minimum of stone dressings. To the north stands the vicarage, presumably of the same date.
Interior
Interior Description
Faced internally up to dado level with red Newington brick. The nave is very wide, with arcades of five-bays, a tall clerestory with two windows to each bay containing Decorated tracery. The aisles also have two windows to each bay, with deep brick reveals, though the north-east bay of the north aisle is quasi-transeptal (but not projecting beyond the level of the aisle wall). The most striking feature of the interior is the vast chancel arch; beyond this is a short choir with a sanctuary of five canted sides forming an apsidal termination. The tracery of the sanctuary windows is more elaborate than what is essayed elsewhere in the building and the three middle windows contain griocd 19th century stained glass centre panel by Clayton and Bell and the flanking panels by Beaton, Butler and Bayne. The sanctuary is also distinguished by the proliferation of stone colonettes dividing the several sides of the apse and supporting the principal timbers of the roof structure.
