Description of Archaeology and History
Carpenter & Ingelow 1880, tower and spire 1898.
The church was meant to be completely regular but the aisle and chapel on the south side were not built, and the arcades are filled with walls of stock brick and temporary windows.
Exterior Description
A Middle Pointed church built of Kentish rag, with an imposing, but busy, tower and spire. The tower is of three unequal stages, the middle one smaller than the other two. In the centre of the west front is a large portal with quadruple shafts; under the portal is a double doorway with a carved tympanum and trumeau figure. Immediately over the porch are two straight-headed three light windows with reticulated tracery. Above the short middle stage is the belfry with a pair of large two light windows on every side. The parapet of the tower has blind arcading, and a small octagonal pinnacled turret at each corner. From within the parapet rises an octagonal drum which supports a spire of similar section with lucarnes on each face.
Building Fabric and Features
Stained Glass
The glass in the east window is signed with a bell. This is the usual mark of John Clement Bell (1860-1944) of the firm of Clayton & Bell.
Interior
Interior Description
The interior of the building is plain. The walls are faced with brick and the scissor-beam roof is without ornament. The nave arcade is of five bays of single chamfered arches on tall quatrefoil piers with fillets. There is no clerestory, since the north aisle is almost as tall as the nave, and has wide three-light windows. The chancel is two bays deep, the arches being narrower than those in the nave, and on, the north side is a large organ chamber. The east window is of five principal lights with coarse but vigorous tracery.
