St. Cuthberts is a church of great architectural and historical interest with evidence of alterations and additions through the C12th, C13th,C15th, C17th and eventual renovation in 1834. The tower of c. 1450 is of regular coursed red sandstone block with battlemented parapet over unusual rectangular openings that appear to have been intended for drainage. The tower is capped by a short stone steeple. Both the Nave and the chancel have been re-roofed in the C19th with oak trussed roof to the Nave and four centred arched timber boarded and panelled ceiling to the chancel. Chancel and Nave have clearly been raised in height. The nave has been raised to accommodate a gallery at the west end. Although the high level windows to the south side of the Nave appear to be C19th copies of an earlier window to the north side of the chancel the walling masonry at high level suggest an earlier date for the raising of the nave roof. This walling masonry differs markedly from the clearly C19th style of the added buttresses, porch, vestry and east window. Generally the walling masonry of red local sandstone differs widely in character, uncoursed rubble, random coursed and coursed suggesting extensive alteration over the life of the church. Although the work carried out in 1834 is extensive it has nevertheless been executed in a rather more sensitive manner that could be expected of later C19th interventions. Throughout the church there are numerous marble memorials to members of the Musgrave family, rectors and Musgrave family staff. Several of these memorials are extremely ornate and of high quality.
