Building
Ground Plan Description and Dimensions
Ground plan:
Large nave and chancel under a continuous roofline; the nave has north and south aisles; the chancel has a north vestry; octagonal bell-turret at the north-west.
Exterior Description
Built of brick, in a rather austere manner; the style is early English with lancet windows throughout - aisle and clerestorey lancets for the most part grouped in pairs; five immensely tall lancets (three blank and two pierced) in the west front, and the usual group of three tall lancets for the east window. Not much can be added about the north and south flanks of the building; entrance to the church is in the western bay of the south aisle and the south door has three orders of moulded brickwork. A string-course runs immediately below the windows. The west front is the 'show' front, but only in a modest way. Above the group of five tall lancets are two smaller lancets to light the upper reaches of the nave and at the apex of the gable is an elegantly floriated stone gable cross. Linking nave and north aisle visually is the octagonal bell-turret whose form is partly obscured up to nave eaves' level by one of the pair of massive buttresses which flank the main west front. Above this level the turret becomes more elaborate and consists of two subsidiary stages with sunken panels and moulded brick frames: the upper of these two stages has pierced and louvred bell-openings and from it rises the copper-covered fleche. The main roof coverings are of pantiles.
Building Fabric and Features
Stained Glass
c.1902
The east window has stained glass of c. 1902. It is the Evans memorial and a framed cartoon for it is in the church. The subject is the Crucifixion, with the Blessed Virgin and St. John in the flanking lights.
Stained Glass
1918
South aisle. The Sower; St. Peter; The Reaper. 1918 (Martin Memorial).
Stained Glass
1938
North aisle, west. Jesus and child; St. Elizabeth and children.
Interior
Interior Description
Inside, the church is impressive - but the scale is daunting. The arcades are supported on lofty stone pillars, alternately circular and octagonal, and the arches themselves are also of stone; elsewhere it is unrelieved brickwork again, neither whitened nor (for the most part) decorated in any way. The lower parts of the chancel walls have wooden panelling, and there is a curtain below the west window, but these do little to soften the austerity of the building. It is an impressiveness without emotion, and the great height creates a sense of capture rather than welcome.
