The present church of St Nicholas was built on the site of an earlier church that was completely demolished. It took around 2 years to build and was consecrated in April 1866. The MacLean family of Lazonby Hall met the cost and the architect was Anthony Salvin. It has a layout and atmosphere typical of the mid Victorian Gothic style with chancel, nave, north aisle and under tower space for four bells. Built of local Lazonby sandstone, it is lime plastered internally except for the columns. The present day ambience of the interior owes much to the wood carving work of Rev Canon Wilson, who was Rector 1877- 1920 and created the wooden screens that are the most visually striking impression on entering the church. The font, originally under the tower, was moved to the front of the Nave in 1982 when some of the front pews were taken out. A disabled toilet and and servery were created at the west end of the north aisle in 2009 and further pews removed/rearranged on 2014 to create a more flexible use of space.
